I am from India and came here on H1-B. What documents are needed for this?
It is for the military draft. The government needs your name so that if a major war breaks out they can conscript you. All male persons aged 18 to 26 are subject to this unless they are in a valid non-immigrant status.

Did you get your GC before you turned 26? If Yes, you needed to register otherwise you did not.

OP needed to register with SS only if he were illegaly present in the US at some point. Otherwise all he needs is to contact selective service (SIL unit) for a status information letter and he will be fine.

If you never set your foot on US soil between 18 and 26, never bother about it. Just answer the correct question about wheher you were in USA betyween 18 and 26 as immigrant or illegal immigrant but not as legal nonimmigrant, then skip all the rest selective service related question
