Selective Service: pretty sure I registered, but SS can't find the record

I'm in my mid 30's, and want to proceed with my N400. I have been married to an American citizen for 12 years, and while digging up all my INS related documents, I couldn't find anything regarding the Selective Service. I'm fairly sure I registered (99%, I remember having it in my hand in a certain location), but I can't find any SS related documents, and their website/phone support indicate I never registered.

Judging by other threads, I don't have to worry about this, but I am still wondering what really happened, and how I should explain this? Would definitely appreciate your input!

Their phone people say you weren't registered? That's strange. I know their web site doesn't have access to all records, but the people on the phone can do additional searching to confirm your registration.

If you are over 31 years old it is irrelevant for the N-400. Have you got the same name and SSN that you had at that earlier time when you believe that you registered? Were you in school or was it a part of the immigration paperwork when you think you got registered?

I am pretty sure I registered when I got my initial paperwork going. I have still the same SSN/Name, nothing has changed. I am guessing since SS can't find the record, that the registration form was either never processed or got lost.

FYI, I finally started the N400 process, and contacted the SS agency (I really wanted to know what happened), which mailed me my registration # after sending them the info they were looking for. When looking up this registration #, it confirmed I did register back in 2000. Very strange since they couldn't find this information when I tried SS website, and when I called them the first time.
