scenario for leaving the US when on TN

I am on TN in the US and am considering moving back to Canada. I realize the following are very common questions but I've tried searching this forum and the web, and can't quite find the answers.

Q: After my last day with my US employer, how long do I have to get my affairs in order? e.g. if I gave 2 weeks notice and started to orchestrate the movers, how long after the 2 weeks would I have?

Q: I may need 2 trips to complete my move. When I re-enter the US, would I request entry under a B1-B2 Visa? Is that relatively smooth in this case? I am always honest but I want to know the reaction when I say "well I am not working in the US but I have a car and some stuff at an apartment, and need to bring a move to closure".

thank you
M.

-- You should move out as soon as you can - within a reasonable time frame. A couple of weeks is okay, but a few months wouldn't be ok. There is no concrete time defined for this.

-- I would recommend completing the move in one trip. Trying to get back to the US immediately would raise a lot of questions. No matter how honest you are, you should avoid this situation especially if you anticipate it.

What bigboy said.

If you want to stay in US longer than a couple of weeks after your TN ends (especially if your I-94 is also expired) a mail-in I-539 to change your status to B2 is preferable, which can buy you an extra stay of several months.

BUt, even if you do this, the next time you re-enter US, you had better have concrete proof that you are living and working in Canada.

Just on taxes: make sure you have addressed all you fiannaces before moving back to Canada: pension has been moved to broker if needed, severance pay recieved, decision on whether to convert to Roth.
