MY rtd expires on Sep 16, 2005 and I am planning to visit germany On June 29, 2005. I am staying until July 16th, 2005.

I won't have any problems leaving the U.S and entering germany right? Has anyone had experience where the officer has made any problems with RTD valid for only few months..

I have applied for a new one while in possession of the old one..Can anyone tell me?

Thanks

Well you can enter US on last day of expiration on your RTD. There are certain countries in Europe which require a 6 month validity. However your best bet is to call German Consulate and ask them before leaving. It is better if they can give something to you in writing such as the letter I am attaching with this post.

I am quite positive that Germans would let you in if you show at their doors but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Lazerthegreat, Thanks! I emailed german embassy. I hope they give me a positive response...I wish I had applied for a new RTD earlier but I needed it to travel to Thailand for a business trip.

From the date of the departure till expiration, it has 82 days validity.

jermany will not allow you to land on the airport if your rtd is not valid for at least 4 months,i was planning to go to germany but the counselate told me that i cant go because there was only 90 days left in my rtd to expired

You'll be fine ..I've entered germany with only a few weeks left on rtd no problem ...I can check later to make sure how many days and let you know...

Nothing that I remember ...except you know the usual surprised look at the rtd...

I went to Germany last month and before my departure I talked to German Consul and they told me I have to have at least 4 months valid travel document to travel to Germany. They are not gone let you to Germany if your RTD is not valid that much.
My trip was very successful, the Immigration officers in germany were very nice.

Good Luck

well I will try to go because I already bought the ticket. I hope they let me enter germany. I will have my work letter and also my return ticket. Wish me luck people.

Samoel, When was your trip? What date/year?

You guys put up some great posts. I've gotten my recommended approval and am awaiting my final approval. I can't wait to be eligible for an RTD. I've traveled to Germany before but on a visa and it was a pain in the a$$ to get. I have a lot of family in Germany and would eventually like to go visit them and it's great that they actually provide a visa exemption for RTD holders. If I plan to travel to other Schengen states once I arrive in Germany, do I need a visa to enter those countries? I know there is minimal to no checking at the borders of other countries within the EU. I'm sure it's a better idea if I had a visa but if there is an exemption, why pay the fee, obtain an affidavit of family in Germany, and go through the hassle to obtain a visa? Just throwing a question out there. Thank you guys for all your help!

The stamp on TD is dated dec 12 2003 Rtd exp was Jan 08 2004 I returned back dec 22...The German consulate may well have rules about the validity of the rtd but some German IO they don't even know that rtd holder don't need a visa and you have to show them "the letter" plus I checked some more photocopies of old rtd's I have and there are two more trips I made with less than three months on the rtd to exp...I'm not suggesting that there is no rule but I guess either without knowing it I been lucky or the border IO in Germany don't enforce it...Good luck

When I arrived in Frankfurt last month,I showed the letter to the Immigration officer and he was very upset and told me to get that letter out of his face b/c he knows I don't need a visa.I apologized for showing him that and he was very nice after my apologies. So every reaction will depend on the individual's knowledge about RTD but they have a right to refuse you entry if you don't have an RTD with a validation of less than 4 months. It stated that fact on the letter from the consul.

Good luck
