Guys,
In extending B2, is return ticket a must? which mean, without it, B2 extension will most likely be denied?

I know there isn't written rule anywhere that says that return ticket is a must, I'm just asking if anyone has experiene that to a certain degree of certainty can answer my question.

Thanks!

Ideally all genuine visitors should have a return ticket. With regards to an I-539, the most important variable is the reason for the extension request.

No, return ticket is not a must. The reason for the extension is the main factor. Having said that you can do the following:

a) call the airlines and request a quote for a changed return date, without purchasing it (because you dont know yet whether your extension will be approved) and
b) send the quote for the new return date along with copy of the original tickets and a letter explaining that you will purchase them upon approval of I-539.

It worked for me.

I always buy Air India One year Open ticket and attach the E-ticket Receipt without any dates for return dates, OPEN
