Hello,

My husband received oath ceremony (for June 7th) letter today. His interview was held in February at Charlotte, NC.
We have actually planned a vacation outside US (India) starting June 1st.

* Is it advisable to reschedule the oath ceremony? does this process complicate due to re-scheduling?
* Are there any negative impacts if one travels outside US after interview and before oath?

If he decides to appear for oath ceremony on June 7th then
* How sooner can he get the new passport?
* Are there any expedite passport services in North Carolina?/Washington DC?
*How long will it take to get the Indian visa?

I will appreciate your quick response.

Thanks.
S. Mahima

Reschduling the oath ceremony due to a vacation plan is a foolish idea. You really have to consider your priority. What makes more sense to reschedule? Your vacation plan or oath?

DC should have a passport office where you can get your passport within a day or two.

make an Infopass

I would suggest making an Infopass appointment and asking the IO rather than just relying on the forum members.

If you have daily oath ceremony at your DO then, you may not have a delay in getting it re-scheduled.

I know in Tampa DO, oath is done once a month so if you miss the boat, then you may have to wait another month or two.

Someone once descirbed N-400 as a mass produce assembliy line. As long as you are in the moving belt, your application gets processed in a reasonable time. But when you fall off the line for any reason, it requires someone to pick it up and put it back in the line. And that's when most of problems and delays arise. Rescheduling any appointment is such as equivalent to falling off the assembly line. There is no guarantee yours will be put back in timely manner in a proper place. Any unnecessary step should be avoided.

You should look at some of the old threads that involved similar situation. One person requested a new oath date and went on a carribean vacation. 8 months after his vacation, he was still wondering what happened to his request. He never came back to post again so we do not know how he resolved his situation. The moral of the story is obvious.

thank you for your suggestions.

I like equate's description of the N-400 process, and you can certainly count on my view being the same as his. i.e. unless someone died, reschedule the vacation not the oath ceremony.

Having got that out of the way, I think it would also be useful to consider other factors. Specifically, is the vacation short (couple of weeks) or long (several months)? If you are only going to be away a short time, I conceptually see no problem rescheduling oath so long as you are prepared to put up with delays. On the other hand, if you plan on being away for several months, you run the risk of missing the notice for the rescheduled appointment, and also increased questioning when you do finally attend a ceremony.

Be aware also, that you must continue to meet all the requirements of continuous & physical presence right up until you take the oath. USCIS officers will ask you about travel you have taken between interview & oath prior to the ceremony.

has anyone ever has oath letter mailed to them and when you go to the oath, i was told that my oath has been rescheduled and my file has been requested by another office...

i am puzzled....

travel after citizenship interview

Between the citizenship interview and the oath cemerony, can you travel outside the US with your native country passport and green card? My appointment is coming up and I would like to visit my family sometime this summer (for under a week).

Yes, it's fine to travel. One week will not break your continuous residency requirement.
