I thought I had my ss card but when I looked in my safe, it wasn’t there. I don’t remember last time I saw it and I thought it was with my other immigration docs. Anyway, I checked sss.gov and here’s what they require for non-citizen.
I have an I-94 which is expired because I never left country after I renewed my H1B. I have current H1B paperwork but I submitted 485/130/131/751 last month so I guess my status will be AOS as soon as they start processing.
I was wondering if they’d accept my H1B or AOS receipt as evidence or if I should wait till I get my EAD instead? The only concern is I want to have my SS in hand at the day of AOS interview and I might not get my EAD before the interview. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Immigration status and work authorization
To prove your U.S. immigration status, you must show us the current U.S. immigration document, I-94,
Arrival/Departure Record, issued to you when you arrived in the United States. If you are an F-1 or M-1
student, you also must show us your I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status. If
you are a J-1 or J-2 exchange visitor, you must show us your DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility for
Exchange Visitor Status.
For most foreign workers, we only need to see an I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. Some foreign
workers also must show their work permits from DHS (I-766 or I-688B).
