Replacement Social Security Card

After reading the posts and the links I have learned that asylees will be issued new Social security cards without any "Valid For Work Only With INS Authorization"

I shared this info with a friend who went to apply for a replacement card without stamp. His experience was the person helping was not aware of this and he had to argue his case. In the end he was told his application will need to be verified by the INS and he will be issued a new card pending on INS approval.
They did not issue him any receipt that they had received his application and was told that it will take 6 or more weeks.

My questions are regarding experience of people here who have requested new cards without the ""Valid For Work Only With INS Authorization"

Was receipt issued to you after the Social Security Staff took the application?

How long it took before the new card without the stamp arrived?

How was the experience in the Social Security Card office?

I myself want to go and apply for replacement social security card and just want to be prepared before I go.

Experiences of asylees going to SS offices to apply for unrestricted cards have been posted in this forum several times. Some had no problem and others had to argue. But at the end, all of them finally got their unrestricted SSC.
In my case, my family and I went to the same SS office but in different dates. Nobody in my family had any problem, the SS employee was aware of everything and they received their card within few weeks.
When I went to the same office I had to argue with the SS employee. She didn't even want to read the letters with the new policy. After an argument she decided to consult with INS first. Then, weeks after I received a note saying that the consultation was made and I was going to receive my new SS card in few weeks and I in fact received the unrestricted SS card.
So, I believe your friend finally will get his unrestricted SS card. Be prepared to argue, bring the new policy, your I-94 (showing your asylum status), EAD (only if you have the one showing asylum status).
There are several threads posting others experiences in this regard. Check them out.

Good luck

i helped my friend to change ssc,
that clerk didnt refuse our application, but she asked my friend to fill out a form which use to connect with INS..actually it's a confirmation form...that clerk told me if everything goes well, hopefully my friend will receive a nonrestrict ssc within 6 month....
6 month..!kinda shocked

Guys, will the EAD by it self be enough to get an unrestricted SS card?
that's all I have plus a copy of a Judge letter granting my asylum?
thanks

I myself went to apply for the SSC without the stamp and here is my experience. The person processing the application was not familiar with the process, which is understandable. She took some time going through the documentation.

Documents that are described here in the forum, I took a copy of couple of them pertaining to this policy. This person was going through the same document that she printed out from her computer. Below are my observations/perceptions:

Probably as the first step in the document says that they should be able to see the special code via their computer, I don't think she was able to verify that through computer query. So she tried to call the phone number. Phone number did not help her verify my status.

I had taken with me :

RTD
EAD
I-94
Approval Letter
Current Social Security Card that has stamp on it
State issued ID card

She took a copy of all these above and informed me that since she can not get confirmation, she will be sending my information to INS and my card will be issued pending on the approval from the INS. She did not took a guess to how long it will be be for me to receive my new Social security card.

As per the document I had read. As long you have a decision letter and/or I-94, it is sufficient to apply for the SSC.

I came home and called the same number that is in the documentation to verify that she was not able to confirm my asylum status. I called the number and followed the prompts and my status information is indeed not on it. Which is strange as my case was approved in Dec 97. It does not have any informtion on a new case either of a friend who was assigned asylum last year.

On my second call, I realized that this line was for Immigration court something and my case was handled by the INS office in NY. My interview was in the INS office and here I was given the asylum. I never had to go in an immigration court. So based on this information maybe the reason the status info for me or this other person was not in the automatic phone line as we had never been in an immigration court. (This is just me thinking aloud, other wise I have no knowledge about this)

This has been my experience, and based on the feedback and information I have picked up here it seems that it will take a little more time but I should be getting it. I will post more information as I have it or once I receive the card.

Thanks for your detailed message Rasylee.
So you think I will have problem getting unrestriced SSC with the document I have:
-old SSC (restricted).
-EAD
-Copy of Judge letter (Granting my asylum).

Thanks again

Make sure your EAD has the code for asylees A(05) and you won't have problems.
If your EAD has code C(09) is not going to help, and better not to show it.
Anyways, you will get your unrestricted SS card in the mail after they check your status with INS.
Good luck

Thanks Alanpero,
Yeah my EAD says A05 on it.
what's C(09) BTW?

It is the code for I-485 applicants which also covers EB, and other types of LPR applications.

alanpero1,

If you are an asylee and have already applied for adjustment of status then aren't you suppose to fill out C (09) in the appropriate category while applying for an EAD ?

I was under the assumption that if prior to your filing for adjustment of status you can use A 05 but if you have already applied for green card then you fill out C 09 as that is one's current status (AAOS) Applicant for Adjustment of Status.

How did your friend obtained Asylum? Did he got the approval letter from an immigration judge or he was approved by the INS Reigional office ?

Another question is when your friend applied for the replacement social security card, was he given a receipt?

My status is that I am still awaiting a response from the Social Security office. I will update my personal experience/status in this regard as it progresses.

Is there a diffrence between being approved from an immigration judge and by the INS Reigional office ?

Thanks

As far as the question goes regarding difference in approval by an immigration judge or a reigional office, there should be no difference because they both give applicant the same status.

===

I had called the 1-800- Phone number that social security office people call to verify the asylum status. What I heard on the automated greeting was that it was some sort of Immigration Court Status line. When prompted I followed the directions and put my A #. There was no status found for my A #.

I tried my brother's A # and that was not found in the system either. Now my case was approved in Dec of 97. My brother's case was approved in November of 2001.

So this system did not have information on a relatively old case (mine which is almost 5 years) and a newer case (less then a year )

From some responses on this site I had gathered that some applictions were accepted after confirmation from the phone system and were issued the SS card.

So I was thinking that since our cases were approved by a reigional office and this information may not be part of the Immigration Court Status line as we never went to any court. This is just pure speculation on my part at the moment and this is what I was trying to verify when I was asking about how the person had received the approval.

The system has information on cases as far back as the mid 1980s.

But if you were never charged in court, how would the court has info on you?
