Unrestricted Social Security Card

Well after my initial posts here. I waited for approximately 12 weeks and still no response from Social Security Administration.
I was frustrated but obviously frustration alone does not solve problems so I called up my congressman's office. Informed them that I needed some help with a social security matter.

Once I talked to the person she was adamant that asylee's have to get an EAD every year. I told her it was not the case and she said she will call me back. In few hours she did and this time it was some person from Congressman's office who supposedly dealt exclusively with immigration. This person was rude and kept on insisting that asylees are REQUIRED to renew their EAD. Instead of arguing with her I said how about I FAX you the documents that establish otherwise. I got their fax # and Faxed them over about 10 pages. These are three documents whose links I had learned from this forum.

After my fax I got a call back from this contact from congressman's office and she said that she will look into this further. After two days she called me and informed me that indeed those documents did check out and yes asylees should be issued unrestricted social security card and asked me which office I had went to apply. I gave her the location.

She called me back again next day, gave me the name of the supervisor who had been contacted and told me to contact her if there is any issue.

I went to that office last monday (1/13/03). When the person at the window told me she can not do it. I had taken the same documents I had faxed earlier. I informed her that This person from congressman's office has talked with your XYZ supervisor.

She went in the back and later on this matter was resolved in about 15 minutes. I was informed that I will recive the new card in 7-10 buisness days. I did receive it today.

Moral of this story is :

When we run into these road blocks when officials are not familiar with law and regulations regarding us Asylees. Then we should involve proper authorities and educate those personnel.

Counter argument is that this is not our job to educate these folks. But lets look at the benefit of it. With one person's time investment now future applicants will not have to go through this hassle. I will also write a Thank you letter tomorrow to the staff in congressman's office who assisted in this matter.

My heartfelt thanks and gratitude goes to our unsung heroes here in this forum who are researching for the links and supporting documents that can be used by all of us. Thank You!
your work is appreciated......

Congratulations on getting a new social security card.

I agree with your comments. Asylees cannot be shy in asserting their rights.

I also suggest you send a second letter to the legislative side of representative's office. Use this story as an illustration of the daily hassles faced by asylees and ask him/her to look into the 10000 cap. You never know what can happen.

The more people do this, the more likely legislative action can be taken.

Best wishes,

Good!!

Very good, RAsylee.
That is the way to do it!!!

I have exactly the same problem. How can I know who my congressmen are?
I'll do the same.

Thank you.

Don't worry about that

I got my unrestricted SSC with in 3 weeks after applying for it.
It is our right .It is not a gift from any body, you will get it a little patience.

I think it is just the matter of how informed people in SS office are. First time I went, they turned me down, without even looking at the printout and were very rude. I tried again couple month later. They just took my application wothout asking a question. I guess they finally got the memo

Hi, I am a new member to this forum, and I must say that since I started reading the messages, it has been very helpful to me. Especially the Social Security card issue. I just wanted to let you know that I went to the SS office and applied for the unrestricted card. I didnt face much of a problem, but yes, the lady at the counter didi pull out her file and looked thru thier policies and procedures as according to her, the docts I showed her, which I got from the link provided on this forum, were of no concern to them, and they have their own policies. But I wasnt refused and I was given a reciept and hopefully I will be receiving the card in two weeks.

Re: Florida

I applied two years ago in Broward County.

Are you having trouble?

RE: FLORIDA

Miami,

I went like one year ago to a SS office in Broward county (Wilton Manors), and after an annoying discussion, finallly they accepted my papers, like 4 weeks later I received exactly the same card that I used to have with restriction.

To what office did you go?? did you receive your card without restriction two years ago?

Thanks

Re: RE: FLORIDA

I went to the office in Pembroke Pines and everything went well.

I do not think you need to be forum shopping, since you are ENTITLED to the benefits. You should go back to the same office and insist that they correct the error. Insist on speaking with a supervisor.

On a slightly different note, have you had trouble with the driver's license office, given your asylee documentation?

Drivers License

No, because I have my DL valid until 2006. So I don't have problems with that, YET!!!!

Do you mind to tell us where are you from? Or just private e-mail me? May be we can share some local experiences.

Thanks

I received my new unrestricted card in a week. Just wanted to let you know, there shouldn't be any problems.
