Renewing TN?

Hi Everyone,

I will be going for my TN interview next week and I just had some questions prior to applying. I currently have a TN visa as a Management Consultant and my company and I agreed to work together for another year since they require my assistance. I have a bachelor's and master's degree plus 5 years of Management Consultant experience.

I had no issues obtaining the TN last year, but I am concerned whether they will make an issue of my renewal for the same TN and the same company. When I approached them last year, I told them the plan was to work for only one year, but now I will be requesting another one. I also know Management Consultant TNs are looked upon more closely.

Any advice from those of you who have experienced this or have any knowledge about this? Also, I have my original degrees with me and copies of my transcripts. Do they require original transcripts or will original degrees, transcript copies, and 5 years of reference letters suffice?

Whatever you used last year will be fine; so will the fact that you are renewing for another year.
 
This should not be an issue.

You cannot predict the future. Your intention is to work for one year. At the end of the one year, you can assess your situation and determine what to do for the next year.

Also, remember to answer the Immigration Officer's questions directly and briefly. Do not ramble on and give long explanations.

Do it by mail or via the internet and you don't have worry about any interviews. Just do it before your present TN expires.
 
Thank you for your replies. How do we apply on the Internet? This was something mentioned by the user "Simsd". How long does this process usually take and what is required?
 
First you will have to go to the USCIS website and set up an account (actually the employer is supposed to but most people do it for themselves).

Then you fill in an I-129 and send it in via the internet. Remember that the electronic signature is the employer's.

Once it's done your 240 days starts and you can continue to work while it's being processed. The fee is paid by credit card and it's about $ 300.00. At the end of the process it will tell you what documents to send in and where to.

Incorrect. the 240 day grace period applies from the expiry date of your current TN. The day you file has no bearing, as long as it was before expiry.

If you file today or next week or next month, and your TN expires march 1, you can still work until ~Oct 28th pending approval.

The only drawback of submitting an extension rather than renewing at the border is that (a) it is more expensive and (b) if you leave US after your TN expires you still need to get a new one at the boredr; your mail-in is then worthless and must be cancelled.
 
True,

But if you're not planning on leaving soon and if the cost to get to the border are the same or more than the $300.00 then it's worth it. Plus the potential stress of the interview.

Pluses and minuses to both ways.
 
I was only discussing the drawbacks of mail-in/e-file.

Anything else is either a plus or non-issue, no?
