full middle name or just the initial?

Hi guys,

since I became a permanent resident I have been using my middle initial not the full middle name. so my name on the GC SS card and state ID appears like this xxxx x xxxx .
now, form n-400 part 1.A current legal name Full Middle Name and part 1.b your name exactly as it appears on your permanent resident card. shoould I put the Middle initial on both sections or should I put the full middle name.

thanks you

Something similar happened to me.
So in 1.A put your COMPLETE middle name, in 1.b put your name EXACTLY as it appears on your permanent resident card (the middle initial). The rule of thumb is for part 1.b, you have to put down whatever it is printed on your GC, per instruction, even if it's misspelled.

next time if you have an urgent question needed to be answered, it's probably a good idea to make the title of your thread more specific. "Regarding n-400" is too board, almost everyone who posts in this section "US CITIZENSHIP" of the forum is about n400 lol

thank you, I tried to change the title but I was not able to.
isn't the name that I have in my GC, SS card and ID supposed to be my current legal name? I only have the full middle in my expired national passport, all other documents have just the middle initial. I would also like my naturalization certificate and my US passport to have the middle initial not the complete middle. do you still think I should put my complete middle name in section 1.A ? and if I do so will my NC and US passport have the complete middle name?

You do realize that you will be able to talk to the USCIS Officer during your interview, right? At this rate, you may never get that far. Just fill out the form with the information asked for. I havea middle name but sign with just my middle initial, almost everybody does. Your OFFICIAL documentation must match. What you sign on your checks or on the voter rolls after you get naturalized.....NOBODY CARES! {Unless you are Indian, then the Indian Government will screw with you about your name.}

Just get through it.

I think you need to be very careful of what you put in part 1. Because if you forget or choose not to put down a name/names correctly, for example, in your case, middle initial instead of the full middle name in the "current FULL name" blank, if the officer finds out at your interview that you did not put your full legal name as it is on your passport, he/she can delay your case by saying the FBI ONLY checked against the name you put in the form (middle initial), not your full middle name, that your n400 would need to be sent back to the FBI for another background check. I say this b/c I have seen cases on this forum which the applicants forgot to put down all the names they used before (i.e. birth name being different from the current name) and their applications have to be returned to the FBI for another check as a result. A bit different situation but same rationale here, the FBI ONLY checks the names you put on your form, period.

You can ask the officer at the interview if you can only have your middle initial be printed on your naturalization certificate. But you need to fill out the form as carefully and precisely as possible, especially the names, b/c here involves an agency (FBI) other than the USCIS, thus you can not rely on the USCIS folks to fix it for you.

the names on my GC, driver license and other official documents prior to naturalization all showed the middle initial instead of the full middle name, I filled out my form the same way I recommended you in the previous post and it turned out fine for me. The only difference is I had a name change (new 1st name and middle name).
