Hi LenJ

Of course I don't mind if you use the thread!!!

I am not an expert in this matter (hence the thread), but in my opinion, if the political situation changed in your country (and you no longer fear persectuion there), I think you should be OK to go. In addition to that, visiting a sick mother for about 2 weeks is, I think, a good enough reason to go back to COP even for CIS. Just try to bring back any docs regarding your mother that will help you fight your case just in case CIS questions you during citizenship process. I think this has been the agreement on this forum!

Good luck, and I hope you can go to see your mother (that's way more important than CIS/citizenship)!!

Hy MGTgrl,

seems like you've travelled to UE with RTD. My mom is going to go to europe (Netherland and France) using RTD, too. My question is, did you need a visa when you were travelling to UE? If you did, where did you apply for it?

Thanks a lot.

Can I ask you guys advise on the same subject?

I did not post a separate thread as it's related to this conversation and I hope MGTgrl does not mind ….

I have recently received a welcome letter with the Green Card. I really fill confidence and I'm thinking about going to COP. Do I need RTD and Reentry permit or none ???

Because my renewed NP expires on Dec 2006. There was a major regime change, local people even call it revolution and I would like to take this moment to make a quick 2 weeks visit to see my mother, who has multiple health related problems.

I see other interesting notes from member here on the same issue but still do not know what would be a proper thing to do, as if not now, this trip may be significant at the time of citizenship interview.

Thanks in advance

Hi LenJ,

not trying to be smart, but a friend of my mom's just received her GC few months ago based on the assylum.

Many people say that we should not go back to the original country (I've heard many unlucky cases abt it), but this lady actually went home to her origin country for abt 3 weeks and has come back to US safely.

I do not want to tell you what you have to do, all I wanted to do is to share this experience with you all

HI WongGendeng,

Yes, I had travelled to Europe before. I went to Switzerland using my RTD. If you are talking about the SCHENGEN visa, that's not what I used. Switzerland is a non-SCHENGEN country so I had to go to the Switzerland embassy to get my visa (a regular visa). I gave them all the necessary documents (invitation, bank statement, roundtrip ticket, etc...) and I was given my visa without a problem.

About SCHENGEN visa, I don't know much about it, but some of my friends used it before. They had told me that it was hard to get it at certain embassies versus others. I know a friend of mine who was trying to go to Europe said that it was hard to get a SCHENGEN visa from the France embassy so he got it at the embassy of Spain. HE went to Spain with it and then to France and other part of Europe after that. This was about 3 years ago so things might have changed (so please do check about it) As far as I know, Schengen visa has to be issued by the embassy of the main destination or the country of the first destination. Therefore depending on which country your mom wants to visit first, she needs to go to that embassy and apply for Schengen visa.

Good luck!
