reentering with AP and expired J-1

I am new to this site, so do forgive any simplistic or obvious questions on my part. My I-485 application package is pending; I'd applied for it (based on marriage to a U.S. citizen) while still in J-1 status. I received my EAD and AP in April of 2002. But my J-1 status expired this past Dec (2002). I am planning to attend my sister's wedding overseas this Feb (2003), and am now worried about not being able to re-enter upon my return. Would I currently be defined as being "out of status" or "unlawfully present in the country" (if there's a distinction between the two in the first place)?
When I apply to renew my EAD, what should I put down in the section asking for "current immigration status"??
Thanks in advance for any advice!

AOS is your new status (aka adjustee). Use AP for travel, file EAD (w-9 with date before J expiry) with employer.
