Re-Entry Permits & Still Abroad

I would really appreciate someone's help on this:

My family obtained their green cards in August 2009, they entered the US on their I-551s and applied for re-entry permits.
they got the fingerprints done before they left and received the actual re-entry permits.
it is valid for 2 years. Do they have to re-enter the US at least once within those 2 years? or does the re-entry permits protect them totally and allow them to be in their home country for the entire 2 years?
They are planning on moving to the US right before it expires, but until then, will this prevent them from losing their Green Cards?

Thank you

They have to return to the US before the permits expire, and they can come and go as much as they want. However, just remember that they still have to maintain, and if asked, show ties to the US when they come back.

is it not that if ur an LPR u could go abroad and return and ur safe as long as its before the anniversary of ur departure (provided u can prove ur ties in america and non abandoning of residency) ?
