Re-Entry permit

Hi, If I fly to USA and pick up green card and request Re-Entry permit for how long can I be away?? Also how does the application work, does it cost anything? Do they give you a new visa or something.
 
You will have to wait for the green card and also for your biometrics The basic rule in the US is nothing is free, I think the reentry permit fee is 585
 
You don't have to wait for the card. You can send a copy of the visa and stamp in your passport. You must send the application when you're in the country, and then go to the biometrics appointment a few weeks later. You can leave in-between the time CIS receives the application, and your appointment, but someone must check the mail for you. They will send the approved permit to the embassy or consulate where you live abroad. You can stay out of the country for around 2 years. Apply using form I-131.
 
I think you only need a re-entry permit if you're gone for a LONG time. A close family friend got her GC a few years ago. She went to US, stayed a few months then came back and stayed here another few months to handle the rest of her affairs before she went back to stay. No permit necessary. Now she comes home on vacation for a couple weeks. Still no re-entry P needed.
But to be sure, you should check with uscis.
