Re-entry permit expiring - medical emergency

My parents have a green card and they are in India right now with a re-entry permit. The permit is due to expire on June 6 next month. They were planning to come back to US on June 1st and had booked a one way ticket as well. Unfortunately, my father had some medical condition last week and doctors are advising him not to travel for next two months. What are their options? Is there a way through which they can extend the re-entry permit or enter US on an expired re-entry permit (using some supporting medical documents)?

Thanks

As far as I know (read somewhere) if REP expires, last option is to go to American consulate in india and explain the situation, but there is no guarantee they will give another permit(call returning resident visa or something), but it is a huge risk.

Good luck..

Sorry to hear that. The permit is for two years for GC holders who supposed to need this time overseas for certain logic reasons (work, study......) not just to go to your home country and come back and forth till you get your citizen. The citizenship will take into consideration all that.

They left about 2 year ago (June 14, 2006). My parents were still employed there at that time. Now they are retired and ready to move back to US. We are trying to collect some information on how we can approach US consulate (in India) to get any extension. Even a two month extension would be sufficient. If someone has more information on this, please let me know.

Thanks

tell your parents to come immediately at least for month or so and then go back .
This way they can at least keep the green card without lot of anxiety ( going to consulate etc , lot of hastle, lot of questios).
Then after going back then finish whatever they were doing.
Is it retirement from the service?
Do not worry about citizenship now.

I am sorry , I did not read your letter properly.
If it is genuine medical reason then consulate will consider your parents retuning with some fine after the expire of re entry but you should consult the consulate as early as possible.
It is better to consult before the expire date of the reentry permit .

--------------------They need to be back before Reentry Permit gets expired. US consulate in India cant extend the reentry permit.

-------------Consulates cant extend Reentry permit. US consulate is not under USCIS, Consulates are under DOS.
read about SB1 option, it is long procedure and Consulate may or may not give it
