Question regarding 3 year time

kuestion

I know the TN visa is good for 3 years and I read the post about what happens when you lose your job but I have kind of a couple of related questions.

1) Can you request a TN visa for shorter periods (say for 6 months or a 1 year) if the employer only wants you for that amount of time (ie. a trial basis) at first before committing? After the shorter period is it ok to request a TN for 3 years after the shorter period expires?

2) What happens if the employer puts the full 3 years in the request and then lets you go after a shorter amount of time? I understand that you must vacate (in practice within 10 days, according to law though, I thought it was on or before your last day of work). My question is how is that time frame determined--ie. how do they know when your last day of work is since it is not necessarily the expiry date on your I-94. Does the employer have to file something in particular when they let go a TN status employee so as to prove the last day of employment and thus when the employee on the TN visa had to have left?

3) If you are let go fairly early (ie. say 5 months in when they requested a 3 year stay), does that affect your future visits to the US on B-1 visas or your subsequent requests for new TNs?

Thank you in advance!!

1. Of course, 3 year is the maximum.
2. You are out of status the moment you are let go. the employer doesn't have to report this (unlike for H-1B) but the problem comes later when you either leave US or go for another TN. they can ask when you were last employed. What you are supposed to do when you leave soon after temrination is hand in your I-94 to Canada border officer when you leave. If you decide you cannot leave quickly (you should have a plan before being let go), you must file I-539 the last day of work for B2.
3. If you have followed (2) above, you will have no problem.
