Hi,

I won DV 07 and enter USA a week ago. My questions are:

1) is getting SSN and GC process started automaticly?
2) How long should i wait till i get both of them?

Thanks a lot for feedbacks

Hi,
The process for you to obtain the true GC ( the one of the size of a credit card ) has been initiated during the 2nd inspection at the POE.
You should have been said that it can take up to 10months for you to receive it.
In most cases, it takes about 2months ( from posts here ).
BUT, you have the "temporary" GC stamp in your passport. Thanks to this ( which is valid for a year ), you can find a job as it serves as proof of your immigration status.

YOU have to go a local SS office. Bring your passport with you.
You will receive a letter showing that you have a pllied for a SSN.
If your immigration status has been entered inot the USCIS database at POE, the SSN should come within a few weeks.

I won DV 07 also and entred USA a week ago. When I got the visa in my country they gave me a letter saying that if i asked for a SSN in my aplication i did not have to aply in US because they will mail it to me automatically when i enter the US. Is that really the case ? DO they really mail it to you wothout going.
About the stamp in my passort it does not say anything or may be i cant read it clearly. The officer just stamped it and wrote a case number over it.
And about how long i have to wait for my GC, is it really 2 months. Because the posts i have seen these last months show that the chances are to receive it in 2-3 or may be 4 weeks. But 2 months is much longer. Please, any hint ?

Hi fikyu,
As far as i know we entered the US the same day.
Have you received your GC yet ? What about the SSN ?
I havent. They sent me the SSN but at the old address i had in my visa application although i asked the guy at the POE to change it.
So my friend at the old address is mailing it to me. I still dont have it in my hands. But no sign of the GC yet. And I dont know where they are going to send it, at the old or at the new address.

That's right. You will receive your ss cards automatically if you asked for it in your application.
My sister, her husband and their 3 children got their green cards in mail in exactly 12 days. My sister and her husband got their SS cards the same day with green cards. We are still waiting for the children's SS cards. It's been a month they arrived here.

Folks

Please let me know if my understanding is right wrt the below:

1. Once we get the temporary stamp on passport (Consular Processing) - I presume this is valid for 6 months and before that we have to enter USA. Am I correct or we can enter even after 6 months ?

2. Once we enter USA - we get a stamp for 1 year. The plastic GC may come anytime within 2-10 months... - So we can work for 1 year for anyone ?

3. If we leave before 1 year completes - then what happens ? Is it safe to leave for a short span (3 months - 6 months) - do we lose GC status ?

4. When does the GC visa get extended (and stamped) further than 1 year ?

Please update.

Thanks
Abdul

you don't get a temporary stamp. You get an immigrant visa valid for 6 months. You cannot enter on an expired visa.

yes, you have all the rights and responsibilities of a permanent resident from the moment you enter the US with an immigrant visa.

3. If we leave before 1 year completes - then what happens ? Is it safe to leave for a short span (3 months - 6 months) - do we lose GC status ?
if you established residence in the US and leave for a short period of time, you will be OK.

4. When does the GC visa get extended (and stamped) further than 1 year ?
it doesn't. If you don't get your plastic GC within about 6 months, you should start worrying and contacting USCIS to get one.
