Question About Tax Transcripts

For the tax account transcript, should I get a tax account transcript for this year? Is that the one that would show the zero balance? Or should I request a Tax account transcript for each of the last 5 years.... I failed to file a return in 2007 but have since fully paid off the balance owed.

What is the basis of your citizenship application? Have you traveled extensively in the past 5 years?

Thanks for taking the time to reply. My green card was recieved through the lotto and I havent traveled extensively last 5 years(less than 20 days). The only Issue I have is that I failed to file taxes in 07 because I was unaware I was treated as a 1099 by my temporary employer back then, I paid the taxes in full this year. Just confused about how to prove that I owe no taxes. Not sure whether to request tax account transcript for this year, or for every year. Does the Account transcript for this year suffice to show I owe nothing to the IRS?

No one? I'm a traffic ticket and tax issue applicant,I'm willing to share my experience thereafter.......hope to hear something from you guys,I'm filling soon..

How did you determine and pay for the taxes for 2007? Did you file a amended return for 2007 or did you carry over the amount on your most recent return?

Thanks for the reply bob, I got a bill 3 years later from the IRS, I'm guessing through some sort of audit they did on me.I paid it in full in April...

You can just call the IRS 800 number and have it fax it on the spot. The down side is that you don't get the state information so you might not be able to fix that.

I know how to get state transcrips but im not sure whether I need the most recent tax account transcript or transcripts for the last 5 years...to prove that i owe no taxes for 2007

Each case is unique...in my case I took the previous three years; at the interview, the tax issue never came up at the interview...in your case, there is a question in the n-400 that asks you if you owe any taxes, you should answer NO...get the previous three years transcripts...and you should be fine.............................if you are lottery beneficiary, they normally grill hard in your category, so you should be prepared well...good luck

" they normally grill hard in your category "
Really ?
Where did you get that info ? and why Lotto winners naturalization applicants would be more scrutinized ?
I came here after trying for the first time the lottery and being picked , I had my interview last week and the whole process took 90 days and my interview was as normal as it could be and got my certificate the same day.
When I came to the US I did not have to adjust anything , I had my permanent visa in hand and I had been checked and interviewed in my home country by the US consulate .

I'm guessing you checked that you owe taxes right? If you didnt, take your taxes papers with you, but dont volunteer it unless they ask for it. Technically speaking, your transcript for this year alone should be fine, because whatever taxes you owe is carried over. But to be extra prepared, take as many transcripts with you. Again, DO NOT volunteer information except they ask you for it.

i checked that i failed to file a tax return and said no regarding owing taxes............Vima you answered my main question though, thank you very much.........

Another question for you guys , can i file a tax return given that i have already paid the balance owed? So I can technically say I have never filed a tax return?..
