Question about completion date when filing for OPT

I have a friend who might be able to graduate in May but will still have a few classes left to get the actual degree. For INS purposes, what will be his completion date, as in by what date will he have to apply for OPT? Before graduation or before the completion of his remaining classes? He intends to finish he classes in the fall semester following graduation. Has anyone ever heard of this scenario?

Folu,
How would your friend get a degree if he has not completed his course work ?
If I understand the situation correctly, your friend is not considered a graduate unless he or she has a degree in their hand.

So it is upto the person to wait until all the course work is done to apply for the OPT or if that person wants to work right away, then OPT can be applied regardless of the graduation....

Kas.

I don't think he will actually get the degree, but he will be able to "walk" during graduation before he actually completes his classes. I know a few people that have been able to "walk" but they were citizens, so it is possible to "walk" even if you have a few classes left. So technically he won't have actually completed the requirements for the degress. I was just wondering if there was some kind of INS issue involved with this.

No he doesn't want to work using OPT until he completes all classes. I was just wondering if one had to apply for OPT by the time he/she attended graduation. But I guess the actual graduation is not the issue but the completion of the requirements to get a degree? Am I right?

what matters is the expiration date on his I-20 and the actual graduation date: not the "walk" procedure.

So is the actual graduation the day he walks or the day he completes the requirements for the degree?

My understanding is that the your student status ends the day you complete your degree requirements, plus a 60 day grace period.

folu, firstly, in case you're worrying if your friend may get some trouble with BCIS because he "walks" before his completion of the degree, no worry. That "walk" is just a ceremony and has nothing to do with the degree completion, for immigration purpose or anything else.

Additionally, the completion date is usually different from the graduation date that will be printed on the transcript. It's usually earlier, as it is the date that you are supposed to take last test required, to submit last paper required, and/or to finish last project required, in order to complete the degree. The date should be set by either or both your academic advisor and/or your International Student Advisor.
