Query related to F-1 Visa approval

Hi,

I got admission in both MA and PhD program in Wayne State University English program, without any funding from the Department. I showed my interest for the PhD program, so the International Office is preparing my I-20 to be sent to me for the PhD program in English. Now I found in the WSU website that approximate expenses are (including tuition fee and living expenses) $30000 per year. I sent my bank statement of my father's account showing about $31500. So it is expected that on my I-20, $30000 will be written on the left hand side and $31500 will be shown as the funding from my father on the right hand side). It is sure that PhD program will be shown as of 5 years duration in my I-20. Can anybody suggest me how much money i need to show in my father's account to get my F-1 visa approved? I think i need to get bank loan sanctioned before appearing the visa interview (Calcutta Visa Consulate). Kindly suggest me how much loan i should get sanctioned? Can anybody suggest other important information related to the PhD visa interview without funding from the School? I am really tensed and eagerly seeking for kind responses.

What you should be asking yourself at this point is whether you will be able to pay for a 5 year PhD program without funding from the University, not whether you can get the visa.

re:

Thanks for your kind response. So for that do i need to show money equivalent to $30000/year times 5 years? is it possible for somebody to show such a huge amount? give me some suggestion what i can do.

There is no way you would be able to show that kind of funding from loans obtained in the US. If you are getting a PhD in English with the intent of remaining in the US, be advised that employment opportunities are very limited especially from anything other than top tier universities.

You would be advised to go only for masters - 1.5 year prpgram and hope that you could obtain university support by demonstrating your competence. It is not unusual for universities NOT to fund international students until they have demonstated they are capable of functioning as teaching assistants.

At that, you would still need to show $40-45,000 depending onwhether you can complete the program in 2 semesters and a summer or 3 full semesters.

It is not a good idea to go for a PhD program without funding, especially in a subject like English. There are hardly jobs for English undergrads, and a lot less for English Professors. I'm not sure what your career goal is but think of that more to determine what to do. I understand wanting to come to the US, but you don't want to waste such a large amount of money on a degree that might end up being worthless. If you do want to come to the US asap, it's better to go for the MA program first since it's only 1.5 to 2 yrs, and then maybe you can receive funding for your PhD.
