Processing time for family based greencards

Hello,

My husband, a US citizen, has sponsered for a family based greencard for me and my son, the notice date being April 4, 2007. However, we are unaware how long it would take for this to be processed. Is there a possibility that I and my son join my husband before August of 2007 (before reopening of schools)? Can anyone educate me about the time frame for this process to be complete?

Thanks,
Sujata Vijayakumar

Sujata,

Are you and your son in the USA? or your home country?

Either way, it is very hard to predict how long it would take. Usually the average is from 3 - 6 months. But if you get stuck in the FBI name check it could be longer, a lot longer.

If you are in the USA, your son can start school in August, even if he is not a resident yet.

Hi Praetorian XI:

Thanks so much for your reply. I have been unable to understand the dates and the process that you have quoted completely. Can you please explain?

Thanks,
Sujata Vijayakumar

Hi Praetorian XI:

Thanks a lot for your reply. I and my son are in India now. That is why I was worried about his school admission.

Thanks,

Well, you will have to go through consular processing (getting an immigrant visa from the US embassy/consulate in India).

That takes time, it is impossible to predict how long. Anywhere from 4 to 8 months. Or it could take longer, due to security checks (name check & background check).

You have 5 months time from your petition until August, maybe someone from India who went through Consular Processing can help you by sharing their experiences?

Thanks a lot for the information. Let me try and find someone from here who has undergone Consular Processing.

Is there anything my husband can do from his end in Atlanta to expediate the process?

Thanks,
Sujata Vijayakumar

If you are waiting in India, there is nothing much you or your husband can do to rush things. It would probably make more sense for you to get your son go to school in India for now.He will be taken in the school district that you will live in here in US.That wont be a problem.

Hi,

First of all thank you all for your replies regarding the processing time of family based green card. In the process of securing a family based green card sponsored by my husband, the first stage I130 has been approved for my son and myself, for which I got a mail. Now the next process seems to be I864. I would greatly appreciate if anybody can help me out with saying how long it takes for this stage to be processed and how long it would take in total for me to secure the green card?

Thanks,
Sujata Vijayakumar
