Problems with SSN/Bank Accounts

Has someone had problems with Opening 'online bank' accounts in US after coming thru as a recent immigrant?

I tried opening an online account with WaMu and at the very last stage it says verifying information and then comes with Error mesg.

Its not Website error or my typo. It seems that having a new SSN has some problems. I went into the branch and sat down with the officer who tried and same thing happened. Shockingly they dont know whats going on and cant help

However he did mention that i have a new SSN and it maybe somethig to do with it. He even showed me how banks verify SSN when they open new accounts 'in person' their system links to SS administration and check in real time the result if positive comes out with the year SSN was issued in and state the resident is from but in my case it was showing 2007XX and xx should have been CA since i am in California.

Has someone come across similar problems with having a new SSN.
My SSN is about 2 months old however.

ask bank officer either its a problem with veryfing SS number through the system or they need some kind of credit score to open their account (I don't think theny need any specific credit score opening a bank accout). If your bank can tell you its happening due to veryfing SS then you need to go to SS office!

Yeah the bank is hopless..all they say is they dont know whats going on and offered to close my existing account if i wish to go to another bank as the leats they can do - that the thing they cant eve tell if its SSN causing it other then the slightly abnormal "XX" which works fine if a officer opens account in person but the particular account i am after can only be opened online and not in person in a branch!!

And i went to SSA just to clarify my name/details etc. They said they got it correctly and cant tell me if theres anything wrong with the SSN or profile

Yes, it seems it takes some time for banks to update their systems with new SSNs. My parents entered the US as LPRs on July 2nd, applied for their SSN on July 12th and received their SSNs around July 18th. When they tried to open a savings account online (WAMU), they were told their SSNs couldn't be verified. They went to a local branch of the bank to ask, and they were told this was very common with new SSNs. There, they opened a free checking account and since they presented the SSN card and the greencard they were waived of that verification. (They couldnt open a secured credit card though, SSNs must be verified to open one.)

Finally, last Friday August, 3rd, they received a call from the bank and were told they could go to apply for a secured credit card and they were also able to open their online savings account and applied for a secured credit card.

Hope this helps...
