Hello,

My family and I began out GC application about 2-3 years ago. For various reasons, which I shall not explain, it was approved only a few months ago.
The problem is, I am an Israeli citizen, and I now reached an age where I have to serve 3 years in the Israeli military. My intentions are to move to the US immediately after those 3 years.

The questions are:

1) How do I ensure that my GC is not taken away?
2) Do I have to register to the selective service? If so how? Their online registration requires a US address.

Any help would be much appreciated

1) you can't, since you will reside in another country
2) if you are under 26. You will register after you become a resident.

1) Isn't army service a justified reason for this delay? Moreover, it is mandatory, and I will spend a few months in jail if I object.

2) I am under 26. Are you sure that I don't have to register? I am considered a resident since I have my green card, even though I currently reside in Israel.

1) How exactly are you going to jail? are they going to come and get you? you are a resident of the USA now and you must abide by the USA laws and one of them is that you will lose your GC if you leave for more than 2 years.

2) I'd register, just to be safe.

1) They probably won't come and get me, but I will never be able to return (to visit family and friends). They will also put it in my police records, and then I will not be able to renew my U.S resident status in 10 years from now (or get a citizenship in 5). So just deserting to the US is not a very good idea.

2) I tried their online registration but it will only accept a US address.

? why?

foreigners don't have to register. Legal and illegal residents must. Now, there is a hint - to be a resident, you need to reside in the States, and hence, you will have a US address. If you don't reside in the States, you don't have a US address and you lose your GC anyway.

You can't live outside the US for 3 years and keep your green card. The point of getting one is they expect you to stay here.

I will stay in the US. But I can't live my whole life around that green card. I was not sure how long it will take to get the green card, or even if I will get it at all.

Keep in mind:
We started the application when I was 16. Back then (and until 18) it was possible for me to move immediately to the US.

Because that is the standard procedure for desertion. They put you in prison for a few months, and write it in your criminal record (which the US will want to see after 5 or 10 years)

have you researched the info about those people who permanently reside in another country?

plus, if you don't go back, you won't go to prison.
