When does your I-94 expire? You have 10 days after your I-94 date of expiry to apply for change or extend your status from H1 to H1/B1..or any other status. But usually even if you apply for H1 transfer after 30-60 days... you may get it transferrred but you may be required to go out of US for stamping as you were out of status.

you need to apply H1 extension before your I-94 expires or 6 months advance of H1 expiry date
