My freind (green card holder) is opening a business in usa

Can I (on h1b) work on his behalf by taking power of attorney, no money will be paid to me. just for paper work. Can I take power attorney to take care of business when he is out of country ?

Thanks

You can work for your friend's company only if his company has sponsored your H1.

The question here is not of payment but if you will work for your friend's company. So the even if you have to work 1 hour a month you will still need a visa from his company. INS won't take into account courtesy.

Gurus please reply!!!

Thanks for the reponse. Is there any website where I can find the rule about it.

You can work for your friend. What kind of work? just shifting table, collecting his mail.
But signing any paper/check/POA on his company is totally prohibited. It proves legally that you worked for another company (with pay or no pay) without work authorization/h1b thus violating USCIS law, liable for deportation.

Hello DD2003,

Well "greatguru" is right and I don't think you need a POA to shift tables or collect mail. Hence you are talking about real serious work like signing papers etc etc so it is illegal to do that as per INS. You can have another H1 if you want to do real serious work for your friend and thus not violate the laws. It's fine to have 2 H1's at a time just that one of the job or work should be part time. But then another issue would arise.......is your friend willing to pay for your work.

Thanks
Anu
