Hello all,

Just for fun, and in the spirit of sharing, anyone care to share their post-GC plans and to-do lists? Stuff that you've been wanting to do but couldn't because you are waiting for the golden ticket?

You can respond whether you got your green card already or waiting for one.

I would guess that the top 3 are: travel back home, buy a house, find a new job!

Thanks for the nuts-and-bolts tips Jackolantern! But I was actually thinking of more personal life plans/dreams such as, taking that long awaited trip, pursuing that dream job, moving to my dream city, finally getting a good night sleep without fretting over the green card, and finally feeling at home here.....and so on.....

Pretty much all of these :) I've been waiting for mine so I could start a school without having to pay a fortune :) I'm also going home after 6 years. House will come later hopefully :)))

1. change my SS card - done
2. graduate in May - didn't depend on GC though
3. I got a new job that's pending my graduation and starts in summer, therefore - move and file the necessary forms
4. File for H1B - is it possible with CGC?
5. No travel plans.

Not to sound ungrateful, none of this applied to me. I was a Canadian living in Canada and enjoying life to its fullest. I only moved to the US since I fell in love with a girl from NYC :) The only reason I moved down south and she did not move up north is because her profession needs re-licensing and re-qualification if she moves out of the US, whereas for me, TCP/IP is the same the world over :)

Don't get me wrong, I love the US and I don't regret the decision of moving I made in 2002 one bit.

With respect, but very little of that depends on the GC. You're certainly able to travel, move, get a great job, buy a house, etc. etc without a GC. I did a lot of that prior to my GC, and I was employment-based which has less flexibility than a marriage-based GC.

If one focuses on the GC as somehow magically opening up a lot of doors that were closed, one is likely to be disappointed. What can open the doors is you; the GC at best might make things a little easier.

Thanks!

I just realized that I am speaking too much from my limited perspective. I was on H1B from 2000 to 2007, but was out of status from 2007 so I couldn't travel while waiting for my green card. Prior to going out of status, I was flying home once a year, so I miss doing that :(

I did buy a house in 2003, while still on H1, with my then-boyfriend-now-husband. Bought another home in 2006 and rented the first one out. So yes, in a way, I agree totally with what you said, no need for a GC to do this. But it does feel so much better to me that we did this and not be forced to sell if my GC had not been approved.

Being on H1 status for many years, I also felt like there wasn't a lot of choices job-wise. I also now feel that I can move to another city if I want to because I don't have to stay put based on my H1 sponsor's location (my background is in public relations, it's not that easy getting new H1 sponsors, based on my experience. It has a lot to do with local contacts/connections/knowledge, it's not like IT or healthcare where the skills are pretty mobile, relatively speaking).

So yeah, I see what you're saying, but in my case (and maybe some others), the GC absolutely makes a lot of things possible :)

Eeemmm, re-think about #8 (and #5,6 also) and perhaps re-route that extra money in #7, definitely a better investment nowadays....:D

"finally getting a good night sleep without fretting over the green card" .... I'll take that one :p

Right now I just want my EAD so I can get a job.
Other than that..... I won't put my life on hold for my GC :)

Can't you do all these on any other visas? Pretty stupid answers my friend.
