140's Poll

The other thread turned ugly, so I am putting this poll UNMODIFIED again and deleting that thread.

140's copy pasted comments,
------------------------------------------
I am a little concerned about the higher level of censorship that seems to becoming the norm here, on this forum! So wanted to post a poll of whether arbitrary deletion of threads/posts is supported by a majority of users.

Do you:
a. Support deletion of threads based upon a single persons discretion.
b. Prefer threads to die a natural death.
c. Prefer a strong warning message issued to the person posting the thread.
d. Prefer the user community to comment on threads and ask for its deletion.
------------------------------------------

PS: Added by Silly Man: Whatever agreement everyone comes to, I will comply with it. 140 did not put a timeout on this thread, but I will go by the assumption that if ONE DAY passes without either a poll or reply to this thread, I will consider the result final and post it in this thread. There will be people who will disagree, but too bad, we will do what the majority decides. Democracy RULES.

I'm sure that everyone is trying his best here but the moderator needs to show more moderation when it comes to deleting and modifying posts and more discretion in his own replies. This board exists to serve its members and the moderator exists to support that community.

The moderator's role should be to enforce the terms of use (as established by board's host) and apply the standards of conduct that the community sets for itself -- not to dictate the rules himself. In the thread that was deleted, the moderator seemed to be acting as a policeman. This is not what this community needs. If this kind of moderating continues, the value of this board as a source of information and support can only diminish.

I'm a member of a number online communities but I have rarely seen such a proactive and "trigger-happy" moderator. Before posts and threads are deleted, I think there should be at least one warning -- even if the thread is OT. As far as I'm concerned the only reason for deleting posts or threads should be when they contain racist or personally abusive content. If a thread is OT it should be locked so that no new posts can be added but such threads should not be deleted.

I think it we should uphold the values like freedom of speech that make this country great.

Peter I do agree with you. (Haha for a change).

About the warning, I did warn Shantanu, but he's being a pain the booty, so next time I deleted without warning. Like I said, it is impractical to have a poll every single time I need to delete someone's thread. The poll above actually is pretty clear by now.

140 .. no comments, your wet pajama is your problem.

You have lost it SillyMan that you have totally missed the point! *sigh*! So Long, it was nice knowing you!

Good luck on your 485! When you do wake up from your power trip, drop me a line!

End of discussion from my side! Unless some major changes are made with regards to forum monitoring, you won't be seeing much of me from now on!

<-- Second thoughts !! Staying here or leaving is your problem. You weren't invited here, you won't be asked to leave. It's totally voluntary.

But what really shocks me is, that ShantanuB hasn't spoken in this thread so far.

calm down

140 and silly,
Calm down, you both contributed a lot to this forum and I appreciate it much.
Take it easy, this kind of 'discussion' and this kind of volunteered member/moderator dilema exist in every such forums.
Have a good evening and a good sleep. Hope can keep seeing your nice posts.

wittAAAA

witAAAA, I agree. and I am very very calm.

But when it Vipsha thinks that keeping Important Threads on top is "Taking Credit", and deleting shantanu's posts is a "Power Trip" .. that is just sad.

Either way, what people think is their problem, have a good evening.

For the record, I did not REQUEST the thread be deleted.

I SUGGESTED that if the thread was going to degenerate into a mudslinging match, perhaps the moderators might consider deleting it.

I made it clear that I would VOTE FOR deleting the thread and reinstating 140's poll unmodified.

Once again, my request is: let moderators live up to that name. I think we have seen enough cussing on either side to buy that retaliations were motivated purely out of intentions to spare us the exposure to cusses.

Enuf sed!

Niladri, for the record, "perhaps the moderators might consider deleting it" ..

Well they did .. so chill.

And voting is impractical .. we cannot have a vote for every single message that needs to be deleted. All you'd see then would be votes.

SM,
While I understand that you've worked hard to make this forum a good place, you've dug lot of holes for yourself. I can hardly believe that nobody is directly of your opinion. And personally I find that (you) being a moderator your selection of words is not so moderate. May be they are OK for someone else as a regular member.

And voting is impractical
Agree, but a warning is a must and very practical to offensive people/messages.

If I were you, I'd immediately give up on being a moderator and start enjoying this forum as a regular member. Again you've contributed a lot to this forum and I appreciate that.

Thanks for clearing that up, SM.

Incidentally, when I suggested that moderators live up to the name, I did not mean their nicks.

Consider myself chilled, Chi...oops...Silly Man.

niladri30, y'know what the funny thing is .....

Both 140 and Vipsha have deleted most of their offensive threads. GEE .. be a real man and atleast face what you wrote here .. have you seen me delete any of the crap I wrote?

Because, I donot *CARE* for a power trip.

srohit, you are right .. being a moderator is no fun, I can't crack jokes anymore. But why can't I crack jokes and play a passive moderator. I haven't really deleted anything (under 10 posts), whats the big deal all about??

But I LOVE to see that the poll above clearly shows a huge support towards passive moderation, followed by if need be support of my decisions (even though comments down here don't as much) .. and frankly, let the moderator do his job rather than pulling his strings. Ah well, I guess I didn't piss off so many people afterall ..

Dude, do you really believe that after that huge brawl you initiated during the Telugu bashing days. Threads may have been deleted but not forgotten. Heck, I still am trying to get unpissed at you.

All said, do stop with the bickering and be the good senior members/moderators/GC holders wanabe that you were. (Whats with the pajama thingy anyway? I tried to but couldn't get it, anyway don't bother explaining.)

When I come here for info sharing on GC I need to see just that. A lil bit of OT doesn't hurt once a while. Now whats going on here is all OT. You said they said and we all heard, now get on with it.

Hope to see you guys in this forum in future, when all this is behind you. Until then, dare I say CHILL! FELLOWS!!

SillyMan

My god you are a egomaniac let me quote an earlier thread!
quote -> 140_takes_4ever, for one last time, put an end to this discussion, or I will have to delete your threads here too .. whether you like it or not. No mudslinging .. ya get it???<-quote

Don't see? Vipsha and me are trying to end this discussion! This was never a macho competetion of who is the real man! I guess you will never see that though your fog of conceit! Everyone who matters has already read our comments! What is there to face up? I deleted my posts because I was tired of this discussion! A discussion is of value only if the other person is listening!

With regards to you not deleting any of the crap you write, maybe that exactly is the problem! You don't delete your crap which a moderator (if you were not him) would!

With regards to the poll, again your are mistaken! Count the votes a full 68 % disagree with your style of functioning! Only 32 % agree with your style of functioning. So have you done your job! NO! Will you voted back into office NO! Have you pissed enough people off, YES!

Hey I thought we weren't gonna see much of you here .. changed your mind .. addicted to this forum are ya ??

An observation:

A moderator should caution conduct that does not fall into lines with the stated guidelines. (i.e. this usually relates to sexually, racially, religious offensiveness material). If the subject matter is merely an interpretation of spam or a bit of nuisance, then more tolerance should be extended.

A moderator should, in the role of being a moderator, i.e. making decisions about deletions, should be matter of fact or professional. To humiliate, discredit is wrong. You don't make comments about someones wet pajamas or taunt someone who says they are leaving. To do so is do have stepped way out of bounds of a moderator role and to become a board bully in the position of power.

A moderator can change hats, and be the joking person we all enjoy on the board, when not in a moderating role.

I think for SM it is a learning experience in the role and we should cut him some slack as he should cut 140 some slack too. I think this board is invaluable to everyone and we shouldn't chase anyone away and it would be a shame if we let in degenerate because of a few mistakes.

I think both 140 and SM have a lot to contribute and I put it down to the stress we all have waiting for our approvals - F*cking BCIS.

Let's let it go....it really isn't that big of an issue in the grand scheme of things ....hopefully the important thing, us all getting our GC's will happen soon!

Haven't seen a vote or reply to this thread since last evening, I am bringing it up, and will close it in a couple of hours.

Have a great weekend everyone.
