Usually Murthy.com posts useful information but this article is just plain stupid. Some of the arguments made are utterly laughable and makes me wonder the author's ability to reason with good logics.

The first two points "Specific Benefits for the I-485 Applicant" and "EAD and AP Extensions Available Each Year" have nothing to do with retrogression. It is the benefit of I-485 application, NOT the benefit of retrogression! Those benefits will always be there, retrogression or not!

The third point about getting more time for finding a spouse is ridiculous. Is anyone with a pending I485 willing to spend extra YEARS just for the sake of finding a more suitable soulmate? I think not. What does that have to with those who are not en route to a "lived happily ever after" prince-princess type of marriage?

Perhaps the most moronic argument made in the article is "If the USCIS had approved the I-485 within fewer than 180 days, such an adjustment applicant would legally not be able to take advantage of portability to change employers! ". It seems that the author does not respect their readers and does not think they have enough intelligent to know: "Duh! If my I-485 is approved within fewewr than 180 days, that means I have my greencard and will NOT need to use portability!".

I think the title should be "Benefits of Pending I-1485 Applicants" instead of retrogression.

I don't think there is anything wrong with her statement about the portability issue. She is just trying to emphasize it. If you know it's ok, but a lot of people are still confused with this issue. You can't change your job if your pending I-485 is less than 180 days. Even if your GC is approved you can't leave your employer right away either. That's why you would be advised by your attorney to stay with your current employer for at least six months or 1 year is pretty safe. Otherwise you would be questioned about your motives of working for your employer and for getting the GC.

I do agree with you that the point of searching a soulmate and getting married is kind awkward.

There are plenty of benefits for Murthy...multiple EAD, H1, AP filings etc.

Of course there are benefits of retrogression. Benefits for lawyers who'll get more work because of it, and benefits for people who buy and sell labor substitutions.
 
The only potential benefit of huge retrogressions is that it may be the only thing that will force Congress to finally pass a bill that will dramatically change the immigration landscape and deal with this great problem.
 
Well, retrogression can give benefit to sponser employer since people without
I485 pending has to stick with their employer. So, probably your employer appreciates retrogression, though you hate it.
 
It'll only help people who need time to find spouses. It'll also depress salaries as employees cannot leave. It'll help lawers who'll file more h1b extensions. Aparently anything which is bad for sb is good for sb else.
 
There is no specific benifit of "Retrogression" (process of dates going back), but if the Dates are not current, it certainly induces some fairness in the whole GC process. I'd say, if the dates are 3 years behind, it would be very fair to one and all. That way, one who gets labor in 1 day and one who takes 2 years will be treated in same way for 485.

The accident of location, company, time, lawyer should not be factors in who gets GC first. An dates in the past will help in correcting these anamolies.
