Hi,

I would deeply appreciate with anyone can kindly provide some information to the following questions:

1) I am a US citizen and I would like to sponsor green card for my 70 years old mum who is a Malaysian citizen. Is the petition/application process something that I can do on my own or should I engage immigration lawyer?

2) I understand once the petition is approved, I would be able to immediately bring my mum to US. Could anyone please let me know how long does it take from the time of filing the petition to the time that the petition is approved and my mum would be able to come over and stay with me.

3) Would this process be shorten significantly if I engage an immigration lawyer to help me with the petition process instead of doing it on my own?

Thank you in advance for any information.

I think the process is the same like for anyone else. File i130, I485 and all the other forms along with it. Get a lawyer.

But I don't think you thought it through. What's going to happen after she arrives in the USA? What if she needs medical treatment or spend some time in the hospital? The chances of that are pretty high at her age. Are you ready to pay for all of it? Remember, you will be financially responsible for her up to $16000 per year in the eyes of the US govt. One day in hospital can cost you around $10000 or more per day. She most likely will not be able to get a health insurance, or it will be very expensive. Are you ready to pay for all these bills?

it's just I-130 since mom is outside the US.

Have you thought about who is going to pay for mom's medical coverage??? just like Czech guy said...
