Please help! Question about F-1 Visa and 221g

Hi,

My best friend went to the US Consulate in Mumbai. He applied for a Phd and got accepted to a good school. His school starts on the 14th of Jan. He just had his interview on Jan. 8th. He got a 221g, "pending visa" status. They gave him back his passport and said that since his name was so common, they had to some some additional administrative stuff. They also asked himt o confirm his email and said that he should wait until he hears from them.
I don't know what to make of this. My friend said that the guy had a really positive attitude and assured him that he would get the visa. But we have no clue how much time will this take.
Any ideas/suggestions about the time frame or what we should expect? Will they give him the F1 visa or can they still deny it?

They can always deny the visa, of course. However, likely they will just wait for the result of his name check. That can take a few days or weeks though.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. We were just freaking out because we didn't know the timreframe. I hope it doesn't take more than 6 weeks. I've heard horror stories about situations where people have been waiting for over a year. But those were all H-1 visas. Lets hope for the best.

Got the Email!!!

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to update everyone that my friend got an email from the Mumbai Consulate today,asking him to come to the VFS office for his stamping.
His interview was on jan 8th and now its Feb 21st. Not bad.
