Permission to stay in US after quitting job!

Hi all,
A few days ago I quit my TN job for a better position in Canada, which I'll start in a month. My TN-1 expires next year. I need to stay in US another two weeks for packing and for depositing checks which I'll receive in 1-2 weeks. Am I allowed to stay or do I need to change my status from TN to tourist?

Thanks a lot!

IMHO--nelsona may have a different view--it is too late to change your status assuming your resignation was effective a few days ago. It needed to be done before you left your old job. At this point I would simply remain in the country for another 2 weeks and then leave. This is unlikely to have much of a negative effect in the future as you will simply be out of status--not unlawfully present. However once you've physically entered Canada, you shouldn't expect to be let back in to the US for a visit until you've re-established Canadian residency (provincial driver's license, mortgage/lease for a Canadian residence, etc).

Thank you for your answer! I appreciate it.
Actually, I am moving to Santa Lucia, to do work for a Canadian company, so I will not be able to re-establish Canadian residency too soon. Would I be able to enter US with a foreign residency, other than canadian? And.. do I need to inform anyone that I am out of TN status?

Yes as long as you do the things in Santa Lucia needed to establish residency there you should be fine. You simply need things like a D/L and a lease/mortgage wherever you are moving.

If you have a paper I-94 you should turn it in when leaving the US as your means of communicating that you are out of TN status. If you have an electronic I-94 your departure should be recorded automatically. Nothing else needs to be done.

Agrrreed. Stay in US for a reasonable short time (less than a month), get all your affairs in order and then leave for good, handing in I-94 to the airline as you leave.

Got it, I will then turn in the I-94 when leaving (airport or border if I choose to take the bus to Canada).
Thanks.
