Permanent Resident Status through Green Card while not yet a citizen and needing to go back to UK

My wife and I have been in the US for over a year. We are British Citizens. She is a few weeks' pregnant. Sadly, we may have to return to the UK in order to care for an ailing family member and may be there some time.

We deeply love this country and are hoping that, by being born here, our child will enjoy the rights of a US Citizen, and enable us to return here eventually, even if we have to abandon the current maintenance of a permanent US address for the next few years.

If anyone can advise as to where we would stand with that plan, please do help as we are very concerned.

Your child will not be able to sponsor you until he/she is 21 years of age.
