passport renewal

My father-in-law has arrived in the US recently and he was planning to stay for 4 months but they didn't allow him to stay more than two weeks because his passport is valid less than 6 months after two weeks. We renewed the passport and filed I-539 for him but we didn't have a good reason. The only reason that we had was that two weeks is too short and I even didn't mention that as I thought it is not really a good reason.

How much is the chance for the approval? Has anyone had a similar experience?
 
His English is not so good but his understanding is that it is because of passport expiry. It is also written "Passport Validity" on the I-94.
 
Oh, I see. Well you may apply for EOS, but it may get denied. If that happens, one risks 222(g) being enforced the next time he visits the US.

We got the approval. It took 80 days at CSC. Receipt date is Oct 26 and the approval notice date is Jan 13.
