Hello,

Is it possible to renew Indian passport of my parents in the US? They are coming on a Visitors Visa to the US.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Most likely not. It is easier to get it done in India and with tatkal scheme it should take no more than 7-10 days.

Thanks guys for your reply

The reason I want to renew their passport here is they are coming to US in July and their passport is expiring in Dec. If they get a six month visa while entering US, they have to leave earlier since their passport will expire.

It looks like they do not have choice.

Thanks

Some countries require the visitor to have passport validity 6 months longer than date if exit. Not sure if the US has this req. In such countries the visitor can be sent back at port of entry for under 6 months validity.

It is better if you get them to renew in India bef the trip and they carry both passports.

They'll cancel the old passport, but the visa will still be valid. I was in the same situation, and the visa worked. This was 10 years ago.

It is much better if they renew the passport in India before they come to US or book the tickets for US. With TATKAL system they can get passport early.

Folks-

I am trying to get my passport renewal done and really need some help on figuring out the process. I looked at Indian Embassy website and it seems there is a new online application that needs to be filled and printed along with necessary documentation in respective jurisdictions.

based on jurisdiction I will have to apply at NYCGI office, I tried filling out the online application and it has serious bugs. It does not let you save or print the application form in a pdf format. I tried several times with no luck assuming that it could be traffic over the network.

The problem I faced is once you fill the application and click on save button it takes you to an appointment confirmation page, once you click it it should generate a form for printing, instead the page takes you back to the application form in refresh mode, which means all the data I entered is lost.

At the appointment confirmation page it gives you a reference number which is of no use because the form is not saved so I cannot retrieve the data.

After several attempts I called NYCGI an automated answering machine directed me to download the form and send it to NYCGI which according to Indian Embassy directive is no more valid.

Is there anyone out there who have filed for renewal at NYCGI after April 1st 2008? If yes, could you please the process followed for getting the application filled?

for reference below is the link for indian embassy which talk about passport renewal process

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

GC,
It is better to ask a new/unrelated qn in a separate post. Send a complaint email just to notify NY consl of your problems. I see that the new method of passport application has changed for SF consulate also. Try the application from their website, just make sure to change the cons name to NY. PErhaps this method may work? Sorry but I have not used this system and can't help you more.
