Passport Renewal in India (not H1b renewal)

Well, I couldn't find a right sub-forum to post this question, so posting under H1 issues.
How long does it take in India to renew a passport?

Does one have to have 6 months left for re-entry into U.S? Does one such rule exist, and is it strictly enforced?

Better renew it in US it is fast and no hassles.

I agree with great guru. If you live in a city that has a Indian consulate you should get a new passport generally the next day or within a week.

I live in a city that doesn't have an Indian consulate and applied via mail and got my new passport in 10 working days. The Indian embassy/consulate here is extremely efficient.
