I'm just curious because I know someone who even took the previous passport (with the asylum seal from when first entered as an asylee) to the consulate... because they needed to check that it was expired. Thats crazy

What are you talking about? Your consulate should be the last thing you would be worried about. When they process your GC, they MAY ask for a copies or NP and past travels & how you travelled(i.e, RTD, NP, Advance Parole)...So they may question you as to why you renewed your passport when you are claming asylum.
