passport expired, ok for N-400 interview?

I never disagreed with the fact that you have to have a valid passport to enter the US by air. However, this is far from saying that your GC is a special visa and is tied to your passport. You posted that when your passport is expired so is your status, and I just simply do not think that it is true.

I recently entered the US by air from Toronto with only my GC, nothing else.

Fyi,
Was reading the Guide to Naturalization of USCIS. Page 36 of the guide talks about Being Interviewed. The middle column item 3 says redarding documents to bring for interview. "your passport (even if it has expired)".

-That is true. Guide to Naturlization clearly states that "your passport (even if it has expired)". I think its Ok to have an expired passport. Just print that page and present it to the officer in case he/she raises any objection.

-If you are coming from Canada and you only have GC, they do allow you to enter. However it would be different if you are coming from Europe or Asia.

-Example from foreignborn.com (Topic: Renew Your Expiring Green Card)
"If you present an expired passport the USCIS will stamp it; however, it will not be acceptable for employment verification purposes. You may present to your employer an unexpired stamped passport or Form I-94 with photograph, or any of the other documents listed on the Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form). If you require temporary documentation for employment purposes, be sure to inform the USCIS officer of this fact."

-Personally I think one should have a valid passport at all time. USCIS can delay your N-400 processing if they need to do so. But I doubt that they will punish you for not carrying valid passport.

Good luck to all.

Even better, just proves my point.

You can enter U.S from Mexico / Canada with just a GC. This is an exception and does not work when entering U.S from other countries.

Note: If you do not renew your passport and you show up at the N400 interview, be ready to answer the question "why is your passport expired". The question you should ask yourself - are you a risk taker :D

We came here with our Soviet passports. After a while passports were changed in my country, people got new passports. We never applied for the new passports because we did not travel and, so we did not want to spend extra money, especially that my country does not accept dual citizenship. The passports we came with are not in force anymore, even if they are not expired (which they probably are already).
My husband and I had no problems at the citizenship interview regarding the passports (I'll check today to see if they were expired at the time). And, if the Guide says it is OK to go to the interview with an expired passport, then IT IS OK.
What is not OK, is that if you have an urgent situation and you need to travel then you are in real trouble, like my husband was and still is. In order to travel to Armenia he is now applying for Armenian passport, since his name check is still pending for indefinite time.

Thank you all for answering my question. I consulted a lawyer about this issue and the answer is:
A lawful permanent resident does not need to have a valid passport if he is not traveling outside the u.s.
