Passport Application Question

Hi Guys,

on form DS-11, why in heaven do they care about parents information?
I have been looking for some explaination, but couldn't find it.

Also, why do they care about contact information and marriage?
Or even my travel plans? (That I actually don't mind sharing)

Anyone got some definite info as to what is required vs. optional?

Thanks

Hehe, I am quite annoyed about this too, but they ask for this on most passport applications, I think. Somehow, it's standard procedure.

It's totally annoying.

Wouldn't even know where were born (both during WW II) and even birth date of my dad would be a wild guess. I haven't really had much contact with him for 35 years.

Just checked my birth certificate - it's not on there either.

Wow, that's tough. Are you filling in the online form? Because, those questions MAY be optional. I'm not sure. The online form tells you which questions are optional and which aren't. Try it. You might get lucky. Otherwise, I suggest you say "I don't know."

Nah,

have an appointment in SF on Thursday and thought I get my papers in order since you never know what they want. I need to fly out on Sunday.

Even wonder why they need all that info after natz. cert. They already have most of it.

Just renewed my drivers license via the web - that was Staples easy.

I just think they have to drive you nuts, just so you can fit in.

Hehe, but seriously, I think they only need the first and last name of your parents. The rest is not mandatory, just like emergency information and trip information. They don't REALLY need that information.

I hope so.

This is getting boring. I wonder what additional ID they accept. Sort of difficult w/o a GC and a driver's license about to expire.

Id

I hope so.

Any Govt issued photo id should work, but as long as your DL is still valid and has few extra days before it gets expired, they will accept it. Shouldn't be a biggy, but if u have time I would get my DL renewed at your earliest convenience.

Bro,

as I wrote, driver's license renewal has been done - just takes a bit to get it mailed with memorial day etc.

Which DMV is that where they mail you your new license......weird. I am from Atlanta and I got mine in 15 mins, right there and then. I hope they gave you some kind of temp DL so that you could atleast drive before you get your actual DL in the mail. Don't tell me you are without a license now.

Bro,

again - as I wrote - I did that via the web - online. If I like to wait in line, then I spend Tuesday hunting down DMV, Wednesday Oath, Thursday Passport and I am only home for just about a week and as it happens, I do have a life to live too.

Too bad that's the name of the game. I am sure you must looked at all the options and prioritize your things accordingly.

Good luck.

As Cafe noted to you Martin - use the online wizard application form. Most of the questions on the form are mandatory. For example, for parents, they only want to know their names and whether or not they are US citizens. I did not put in the date of birth or place of birth for my parents. In addition, trip information and emergency contact information are also optional. Finally, they do want your wife's name and date of marriage.

Just use the form and you'll see the difference. The passport agency cannot hold you responsible for leaving out items that are optional.

Thanks,

didn't want to go through the application online in case this could cause a conflict with the in-person one.

No conflict at all - the wizard just walks you through the regular DS-11 application and allows you to fill out the answers. Then at the end it tells you to print a hard copy. You are not filing online, merely completing the form online and printing it out.

Folks,
Whats the URL for the online form (I apologize if you or someone already posted it in another thread)?
Will be useful to keep it handy for future use.
