Overstay; wants to go home

My friend has a tourist visa and got overstayed for 2years. He's planning to go home next month. Will he have any troubles leaving the country? Is it true that there's no immigration check during departure? Thanks.

just curious. I know its illegal. what happens if he already submitted his I 94 back before it expires through someone.

If there is no check there is no check.

It is worth mentioning that USCIS is piloting a test-run of US-VISIT exit screening in select airports. This may become standard in the future, such that undocumented departures become documented.
