Out of country for a while....

If GC holder goes outside the country for 1-2 years (e.g study abroad), does he have to wait 3 years and 9 months or 3 years 9 monts plus whatever he spent overseas before he (she) can apply for citizenship?
Let's say I get GC next year and go to England (right away) for 3 years, can I apply 9 months later after I come back or I am gonna have to wait 3 yr 9 mths before I can apply for citizenship?

hey! it is your fault! you didn't mention you are going to come back a few days during that 3 years!
 
unfortunatly, that's true, if you decide to go out of US, first you have to have the re-entry permit(which is usually given for no more than 2 years)
secondly, you have to read more on the INS web that nowdays it's not the case when you can come to US for a FEW weeks and than go back outside of US, they will take your green card!
Don;t risk it!
Check with the lawyer before you go, there are a few little things that you should no!
I am in the same case/ i am outside and i tell you it;s much harder to do anything from abroad regarding your paperwork rather when you are in the States!

About the citizenship?
Are you married to the US citizen?
iF YES, than you have to count 2 years and 9 month after your foot leave the US, before you can apply for US citizenship!
If you spend some time in US before leaving abroad, this time won;t be counted towards your citizenship!!!!
You must be in US for 2,9 months straight without leaving the country before you are eligible to apply for citizenship!!!

Coming back for few days is not going to work. The ploy is too transparant. Google this topic. There are informative articles out there.

Thanks guys, I am not going just because... I am gonna study over there. This is just stupid..... even if you have GC you can't go to a foreign college?
 
there is always an opportunity cost when you are going to do one thing instead of another!
you can either go to England(who wants to study in England anyway?!) and come back every six month(during the semester break) to keep your GC valid
OR
you can just go for your dream, and forget about your Citizenship at U.S

just simple like that, I dont see any stupity about this issue!
