Can one invest and generate income other than the employer's while on H1B such as buying stocks and generating dividends or buying a property and selling it for a profit? Would that pose a potential problem on the tax returns when applying for green card?
Please advise,

Personal investments and their income does not affect your H1 or GC. But you must pay your taxes on those income promptly.

Thanks great guru, does that also apply for getting commissions from a different company? Let's say, you sell something for a company and they issue you a 1099 at the end of the year for the commissions they paid you? Would that be different?

You are not a sales man, selling anything like AMWAY/QUIXTAR and getting commission is not legal under H1B
