Obtaining a Driver License

Is there any laws about asylees obtaining a driver license. It would be helpfull to have it handy when going to apply for DL.

I believe Asylees are allowed to obtain DLs based on their Asylum Approval letter and/or their stamped I-94 (that clearly states their asylee status). Those two documents are proof of legal immigration status in the USA.

Other than that, you should check your state's local DMV website to view the types of documents they require you to bring in addition to your immigration status.

Good Luck on obtaining your DL!

What state are you in? Each state has its own rules and procedures pertaining to licenses. After 9/11 many states decided in a rush to tie licenses to your immigration status. Because many DMV folks have never heard of asylees and refugees, we are sometines in a limbo category or worse(though this is progressing as they gain a better understanding of the immigration system).

I already have a license. I just heard a lot of stories i my state when people with similar status as mine were having trouble at the DMV because it's employees weren't trained enough.
