OATH date and upcoming India travel

Hi All,

The OATH date for me and my wife is 09/25/08. I am traveling to India on 11/25/08. My understanding is that after the OATH, the green card is taken away. So, before I leave for India, I need to get the US passport and then apply for Indian visa.

I am trying to find out if the two months I have between the OATH date of 09/25/08 and the India travel on 11/25/08 is enough to get the US passport and then apply for Indian visa.

The OATH is in Campbell, CA. I would like to avoid postponing the OATH if I can. I have looked in the archives and have not been able to find out if the 2 months is enough to get the US passport and then the Indian visa. Do I need to have PIO or OCI to get Indian visa or just applying for Indian visa is enough.

Do let me know if others have applied for US passport and Indian visa 2 months before India travel. Thanks in advance.

ntjb8,

Please refer to the following link:

You can try to get your passport made the very same day from one of these locations in US. On the other hand if you decide to apply thru your local post office, I would suggest you to expedite your application. You will have it in a week to 10 days max. You can then call Indian embassy/consulate and ask them if you could expedite your Indian visa. make sure when you apply send in copies of your itinerary and confirmed airline tkts showing your travel dates. I am sure you will be fine. 2 months is more than enough to get your US passport and Indian Visa stamped. Good Luck.

Two months between oath and travel is plenty of time. You can obtain passport within 1 day via express processing, or within 2 weeks with regular processing. As for the Indian visa, it shouldn't take more than 2 weeks to obtain one. The last Indian visa I applied for took 5 business days to receive.

Although I was applying as a Canadian citizen, due to being born in Pakistan, they needed to conduct a background check on me. That took 22 months :)

According to Indian embassy, it requires background check on people who were born in South Asian subcontinent regions or nationals of subontinent such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan except Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives. Citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives don't need Indian visa to enter India.
