NYC to LA flight without return ticket?

Hi!

I am a french citizen living in Montreal for many years with the appropriate permits.
I plan to have a long vacation in LA.
I may fly to other places before going back to Montreal, so I prefer not to take a roundtrip ticket in case I only use the half of it.

Train Montreal to NYC = $72
Flight NYC to LA = $120
So if I go by train to NYC, then fly to LA, not only that I don't take the risk to waste a ticket, but it would only cost $192.

Now my question is :
Do you think I may be refused when landing in LA because I don't have a return ticket?
IMO it would make absolutely no sense because I'm already coming from inside the US... So what would they do? send me back to NYC?

Anyone having experience or opinion about this is welcome!
THANKS A LOT!
Merci :)

Immigration checks do not exist for domestic flights. In places like San Juan (and, maybe Seattle and San Diego?), there may be CBP officers checking random passports. This will not happen in LA. Even if, by some crazy chance, CBP does a random check (this is possibly 0.000000001% possible, i.e. impossible), if your story adds up, you're fine, especially if you have proof of funds for your return ticket.

If you WANT to worry, worry about the border crossing on your train ride to NY. You'll actually encounter CBP there, and you'll only have a one way ticket into the US. Again, here, you just need to tell them your plans, possibly show proof of funds and/or your job back home, and you'll be ok.
