Non-voting political activity

What political activity, apart from voting, is OK for permanent residents?

I just learned that permanent residents are excepted from "foreign national" category and can make contributions to elections, I wished I had come across that information earlier.

But what about demonstrations, peaceful protests in response to measures that were passed?

You can do peaceful protests, and you can volunteer for a campaign, but you cannot be a worker at the voting stations. I also don't think you can register people to vote.

Thank you for the info, Jackolantern.

I am also wondering if joining organizations like ACLU or HRC (for LGBT rights) would affect applying for citizenship some day.

Thankfully joining a peaceful campaign to gain (or in California to regain) equality would not be considered a subversive action or anti-american by the government and should not affect future citizenship. I can understand the concern though. The greater the progress in the battle for marriage equality, the uglier its opponents get.

Thank you for your reply, Heresmine. I feel understood in my endeavor and my concerns about it.
