No Travel outside USA until you receive the I485 receipt Notice

Yes of course there is also chance that there might be an accident on the way to US post office. These are all precautions but not law..
Well, nobody said it's a law. You sure don't want to go into the rough neigborhood alone at midnight unless you have no other choice.
It's all about risk management and precaution may save you big time sometimes.

Risk involved

It is 4 weeks since my fedex delivery, and I need to go to Canada for 15 days. This is what my lawer had to say --
"You should know that the regulation that says that I-485s are not abandoned when a person travels on H1/H4 also says that a receipt notice is needed. That is, it wouldn't be needed to get back in, but that in order not to abandon the I-485, you are supposed to wait for the receipt notice. This part of the regulation has not been enforced in years, but it is there...all part of the same rule. So there is a risk in traveling before the receipt notice is issued."

We are on 8-10th year H1/H4 extensions.
Any one care to comment/suggest if I should cancel my trip?

I cancelled my trip this month after talking to my lawyer. USCIS/DOL/State Dept are changing rules/regulations for the worse everyweek. Why do you want to take on an unnecessary risk. I suggest you postpone the trip unless it is some kind of life and death situation.

We chose not to go for my wife's brother's marriage after filing the I-485.
Our lawyers recommended against traveling. I also cancelled a few business trips outside the country.
All this was because we were not sure when USCIS would consider the application as 'filed'. Sometimes it is when they received it, sometimes it is when the service center gets the transferred filed from another service center, and sometimes it is anywhere in between. Our packets reached USCIS on June 25, and the RD is June 27. USCIS only knows how, and when they decide on the RD.
So, it is the safest to wait until you get the receipt.
This is especially true if you have to get a H-1/H-4 validation outside the country. Just my $0.02.
