No reply to extension application?

I applied for extension of B2 visa on 27th Oct '09. My I-94 expired 12 dec 09 . They sent me a letter requesting more documents (RFE) which were submitted on 4th Jan 2010. I have still not heard back from the USCIS. The purpose of my visit is fulfilled now. What will happen if i leave the US now. Will i still receive an answer or will they automatically cancel my extension request ?
 
Would you advise leaving the US or staying back till I get a decision. I will be applying for a J1 soon after I leave. Would that be an issue if I overstayed more( incase the extension got refused)?

I do not even support the notion of extending any B-2 stay, unless it is an absolute life/death emergency. If your extension is denied, you will be considered having overstayed. There is a possibility that a consul may be reluctant in issuing you a J-1 visa seeing that you did not respect immigration regulations the last time you were in the US.
