Drivers licence depends on each state. Am told new york is abit complicated. But in New Jersey it is simple to get. Carry yo national drivers licence. Revise the 50 questions on line and go for the interview. If you pass, you get it in 20 mins time.

As for rent, just google the area you intend to live in and you will get a rough idea about rent.

Each state has its own requirements and procedures for getting a license, but there are some general requirements that apply to every state. The general requirements include a written test, vision test and driving test. Some states will acknowledge previous driving experience, so research the requirements for your state before you go so you can plan to bring any required paperwork from your home country. Many states will consider you a new driver regardless of how many years of driving experience you might have had though, so be prepared for that.

Though the rules and regulations vary from state to state, any driver's license issued by one state is good for driving anywhere in the United States. Regardless of the different procedures, rules, policies, Driver's Licenses are issued by a particular State's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), it may be called something other than DMV in some states. It's known as the Department of Public Safety in Texas, Registry of Motor Vehicles in Massachusetts (RMV), etc.

DMV.org, a privately owned website can provide you with more information regarding getting a driver's license in any of the states http://www.dmv.org/

Thanks, I understand each state is different but there are discussion forums where people say everything about their experience in a particular state and even recommend banks, broadband providers etc.

I have found them for Australia, UK and Canada but nothing at all for USA.

Thanks

Congratulations and welcome to the States! Your GC should arrive in the mail within 2 weeks or so. You will need to visit your local Social Security office in order apply for your SSN. You'll need your GC and passport in order to apply. Here's a link that can provide you with more information:
