Newbie problem

Hi,

This is a short summary of my really strange story (well...it is strange for me...maybe not for this forum).

I'm an Italian citizen.
My legal residence is now Australia, where I'm doing a Master
I applied for an exchange semester in US with a J1 visa as exchange student
(I will not receive any scholarship from my university)

My...question is...

Do I have any possibility to extend/convert my J1 visa to stay in US longer and work there? The idea of going back to Australia/Europe is not exciting at all to me

If make any difference:
• My Australian visa will expire 4/5months after the US visa
• My US visa will be probably required here

Thanks for any help...I tried to have a look on the faqs/forum but I could not find any hints

it all depends on the length of your J-1 program, and whether you will be a subject to home residency requirement. You can read about this requirement on www.travel.state.gov, do a search on "home residency requirement" and J-1 waivers.

Ok. THanks, and...

How do I know if i'm under the INA 212(e)? (just the first point...exchange visitor was participating was financed in whole or in part directly or indirectly by the United States government or the government of the exchange visitor's nationality or last residence)

The visa will be for something like 6/7 months
